Forget iPhone, think GPhone now

Posted by Shayan on February 21, 2008

Gphone Concept Design

Google is on the move. The internet giant has held talks with Orange, the mobile phone operator, about a multi-billion-dollar partnership to create a ‘Google phone’ which makes it easy to search the web wherever you are.

The collaboration between two of the most powerful brands in technology is seen as a potential catalyst for making internet use of mobile phones as natural as on desktop computers and laptops.

Executives from Orange flew to Silicon Valley in California for a meeting at Google’s headquarters, or ‘Googleplex’, to hold preliminary discussions about a joint deal. The companies believe that they have an affinity as brands that are perceived as both ‘positive’ and ‘innovative’.

Their plans centre on a branded Google phone, which would probably also carry Orange’s logo. The device would not be revolutionary: manufactured by HTC, a Taiwanese firm specialising in smart phones and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), it might have a screen similar to a video iPod. But it would have built-in Google software which would dramatically improve on the slow and cumbersome experience of surfing the web from a mobile handset. The Google phone is expected to go on sale in 2008.

Windows Vista SP1 Released To Manufacturing

Posted by Shayan on February 18, 2008

Windows Vista Service Pack 1There has rarely been an operating system so in need of its first service pack as Windows Vista, but all you poor sufferers out there know relief is on the way: SP1 has been released to manufacturing (RTM). For those not familiar with the term, RTM is the last stage before a product is rolled out to consumers. In the case of SP1 it means Microsoft has supplied OEMs and they can get to work installing it on new PCs. As for mass market availability, this will come when English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese language versions of SP1 are set loose on Windows Update in mid-March. Other languages will appear in April.
“Service Pack 1 is a very important milestone because it addresses many of the key issues that our customers have identified with Windows Vista over the last year both, directly and through programs like the Customer Experience Improvement Program.,” said Mike Nash, a member of the Windows Product Management Group, on the official Vista Blog. “With Service Pack 1, we have made great progress in performance, reliability and compatibility.”

For those wanting more than the CliffsNotes, Microsoft has also made available a monstrous document containing the full list of changes.

Be warned, should you finish it you need to get out more.

500xl Speakers are giant iPod earbuds

Posted by Shayan on February 18, 2008

500XL SpeakersWhen you’re on the bus or subway, or anywhere that people tend to be sitting for long periods you tend to notice that many of them are listening to MP3 players. What’s more is that you can almost always pick out the ones rocking out to an iPod by their iconic white earbuds. Most people I know that carry an iPod still use the same earbuds that came with the player because they like the way they look and sound. Well if you’re one that likes the look, here’s a giant pair you can sit on your desktop.

Yes, these are extremely cheesy, but I suppose if you’re a huge Apple fanatic you might be proud to have them sitting on your desk. If you’re wondering, these are actually 500 times the size of your regular iPod earbuds. They draw their power from either your computer’s USB port or from a standard wall outlet. No word on pricing or availability.

BIG in 2008 – Sony PSP Phone

Posted by Shayan on February 17, 2008

Sony PSP PhoneSony Magazine has sent PSP fans’ hearts racing with a line in the latest issue about the much-fabled PSP Phone. “A new PSP-style phone is apparently in development,” it writes.

If that wasn’t enough, it goes on to say the handheld hybrid “could” be in stores this month.

We’re no lawyers, but three words – “style”, “apparently” and “could” – leap out at us as, suggesting this one still resides firmly in the rumour tray. But then this is a mag that Sony itself stamps its approval on, so maybe there really is a new mobile gamer on the way…

What could a new PSP Phone look like? This was our stab at designing one back in December (pictured). For now, folks, that’s as real as it gets.

Sony Ericsson unveils Windows-toting Xperia X1

Posted by Shayan on February 17, 2008

Sony Ericsson has released details of its first ever Windows Mobile-based handset, the X1 – flagship of a new range of smartphones dubbed ‘Xperia’.

The clever caller will feature a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that SE is calling an ‘arc slider’. In reality this means it slightly curves out towards you, banana-fashion.

Although the X1 is indeed powered by Windows Mobile, Sony Ericsson have bolted on top a customisable, icon-driven operating system, ‘Xperia Panels’. Any resemblance to the iPhone’s OS is surely accidental.

The X1 will also boast a crisp 3in display, 400MB of internal memory expandable by Micro SD, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and HSDPA download speeds.

It looks as if ditching the ‘e’ at the beginning of a word is all the rage these days. Just ask Nokia and their Music Xpress range.

Sony Ericsson also announced two more additions to its Cyber-shot range. The C702 is a 3.2mp snapper with GPS function that records the location of every photo. It also uses Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation.

And there’s another 5mp cam in the family to complement the popular K850i. The C902 has many compact features including face detection and 16x digital zoom.
